TABS Introduction

TABS (Thermally Active Building System) principle of active building energy storage system is based on the heat storage capacity of building concrete structure part. The "active" feature of the integrated application of heating and / or cooling is realized by the embedded pipe system in the structural concrete plate. The operating temperature of TABS is close to the ambient temperature, so that the environment cold and heat source and renewable energy can be more effectively used to achieve the purpose of ultra low energy consumption. The thermal activation of the building structure is an extremely ingenious technique; it provides not only a constant, comfortable indoor temperature but also an environmental protection and a saving of the cost of operation. TABS is a central heating and cooling system, which is controlled by heat conduction and heat radiation rather than heat convection.

Heating and cooling by circulating TABS module in hot or cold water (water temperature 15-20 degrees C for cooling, 25-35 degrees C for heating) reached, compared with other heating and cooling system, the heat conduction in very low velocity convection, the system does not produce turbulence. And the system has also made use of natural available energy in an environmentally friendly way. Because the operation temperature of TABS system can be defined as low temperature heating or high temperature cooling system, combined with the concept of proper heating and cooling methods, it can achieve extremely high energy efficiency.

The traditional (air) heating / cooling system is usually designed as a system that can be adjusted at any time with the change of the cold and heat load at the end. In principle, the design of such systems is based on steady state calculation and, on the contrary, TABS is seldom fully loaded in heating and cooling.

The changes in the temperature of the day and night will vary according to the available heat value and the actual cooling load in the concrete building. In order to estimate these fluctuations, the changes in the building load and the heat dissipation capacity of the concrete with time must be taken into account. At the design stage, the thermal and thermal inertia of the building should be calculated to determine the response of the TABS building to thermal energy. Therefore, the dynamic behavior of all factors affecting the internal temperature of a building is an important parameter to be considered. These parameters include:


• weather (especially solar radiation and ambient temperature)

• Structural aspects (heavy or light structure, heat transfer coefficient of building surface and  shading device)

• internal load (number of people in buildings, lighting and equipment)

• user behavior or more other factors

Thermal inertia and concrete characteristics of TABS storage systems make the methods usually run "intermittent" mode; such as: "the night of storage - use in the day", "day of storage - use at night" and / or "intermittent storage - use full"; to maximize the minimum energy consumption and energy saving

The most important factor of TABS's rapid development in Europe, the United States and the same in China is its "low construction cost" and the high operation economy. It is more beneficial to the prefabricated modular buildings that is popularized at present.

The active cooling and heat source and other HVAC systems associated with TABS technology all get further energy saving because of the energy saving characteristics of the system.
